Web development involves creating websites or web applications through design, coding, and maintenance. It ranges from simple static sites to complex dynamic applications utilizing databases and scripting languages. Web developers need to stay updated with trends and continuously learn new skills to create modern and efficient web solutions.

Definition of Terms:

(i) World Wide Web (WWW):

WWW” stands for World Wide Web, which is a system of interconnected documents and other resources linked by hyperlinks and URLs (Uniform Resource Locators). It is a part of the internet and allows users to access and navigate websites and web pages.“www” is a subdomain that is traditionally used to indicate the presence of a website on the World Wide Web.

For example:

 in the URL “www.example.com,” “www” is the subdomain, “example” is the domain, and “.com” is the top-level domain.

(ii) Web Page:

A web page is a document that is displayed on a web browser. It is a basic building block of a website and contains various elements such as text, images, multimedia, links, and interactive elements. Web pages are written in HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) and styled using CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) to define their structure, content, and visual presentation.

(iii) Website:

A website is a collection of related web pages and other digital content that are grouped together and accessible through a common domain name. It is a centralized location on the internet where individuals, organizations, businesses, or other entities can present information, showcase products or services, interact with users, and provide various types of content.

(iv) Web Browser:

A web browser is a software application that allows users to access and navigate the World Wide Web. It retrieves, interprets, and displays web pages, allowing users to view websites, interact with web-based applications, and consume various types of online content.

v) Uniform Resource Locator (URL):

A Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is the address used to locate and access resources on the internet. It serves as a unique identifier for a specific web page, website, file, or any other resource available online. URLs are used by web browsers to retrieve the requested resource and display it to the user. It includes the following two components.

  • The protocol used to access the resource (https://

  • The location of the server. (www.google.com)

(vi) Search Engine:

A search engine is an online tool or service that allows users to search for information on the internet. It helps users find relevant websites, web pages, images, videos, documents, and other types of content based on their search queries.

(vii) Home Page:

A home page, also known as a homepage or start page, is the main or introductory page of a website. It is the default page that users see when they visit a website by entering its domain name or clicking on its URL.

(vii) Web Hosting:

Web hosting refers to the service of providing storage space and resources for websites to be accessible on the Internet. When you create a website, it needs to be hosted on a server so that it can be accessed by users worldwide.

(viii) Web Server:

A web server is a computer program or software that serves as the foundation for delivering web content to clients, such as web browsers when requested over the internet. It handles the processing of HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) requests and serves the requested files, web pages, or other resources to the client.

Types Of Website:

Portal:

A portal, in the context of the Internet, refers to a website or online platform that serves as a gateway or entry point to a wide range of information, resources, services, and applications. It is designed to provide users with a centralized location for accessing various content and functionality.

News:

News portals, also known as news websites or news aggregators, are online platforms that provide users with a wide range of news articles, reports, and updates from various sources. They serve as a centralized source of news and information on a diverse range of topics, including current events, politics, business, sports, entertainment, science, and more.

Informational:

Informational websites provide detailed information about any field. There are many dedicated informational websites for science, arts, sports, online training, research, etc.

Educational:

Educational websites are purely designed to deliver educational material for both, teachers and students such as sabaq.pk, khan academy.org, etc.

Personal:

 A person can share his or her biography or achievements in a custom-developed website.

Business:

 A business website is the best way for any organization to market their products and services. It also tells about the teams, policies and procedures of that business. For instance, www.psx.com.pk is the website of Pakistan Stock Exchange.

Blogs:

A blog is a special type of website that is composed of articles and posts. These articles are organized into categories and sorted by the time when they were published. WordPress is a popular blog site.

Forums:

A forum is an online place where different users can discuss  any topic. These topics can be categorized so that users can easily locate topics of their interest.

Entertainment:

An entertainment website serves content like videos or games purely for the purpose of entertainment. Youtube is widely used for Entertainment.

Social:

A social website is a platform where different people get together and socialize with each other. They can also share their ideas, opinions, and media. Facebook and Twitter are instances of social networking websites.
