Climate is what we expect the weather to be like in a particular place, based on how it has been over many years. Think of climate as the average or typical weather conditions we experience – such as usual temperatures, rain, or snowfall, and wind patterns. We measure these over long periods, usually 30 years or more, to understand what the environment is generally like.
The climate is very important because it influences what plants will grow, what animals can survive, and how we, as people, live day-to-day. For example, in a warm and wet climate, you will find different types of plants than you would in a cold and dry climate. Our houses, clothes, and even the food we eat are often decided by the kind of climate we live in. When we know our climate, we can build our lives to be comfortable and safe in it.
