Speed

advanced divider

Definition:

The distance covered by a moving body in a unit of time is called speed.

  • It is denoted by v.
  • It is a scalar quantity.
  • S.I unit of speed is meter/second (m/s)

Formula:

 \(V = \frac{d}{t}\)

 where;

       v = speed

       d = distance travelled

        t = time taken

Velocity:

Definition:

 The rate of change of displacement with respect to time is called velocity.

Formula:

    \(V = \frac{s}{t}\)

     where;

                                          v= velocity

                                          Δ\(\vec{S}\) = change in displacement

                                          t = time taken

    Uniform Speed:

     An object that covers an equal distance in an equal interval of time its speed is known as uniform speed.

    Uniform velocity:

    A body is said to have uniform velocity if it covers an equal distance in an equal interval of time in a particular direction.

    Numerical Problems :

    “A train covers a distance of 1200 metres in 30 seconds, what is its speed?

    Solution:

    Step 1: Write the known quantities and point out

    quantities to be found.

    d=1200m

    t=30s

    v=?

    Step 2: Write the formula and rearrange if necessary.

    V = d / t

    Step 3: Put the value in formula and calculate

    v = (1200 / 30) = 40 ms-1

    Thus, the speed of the train is 40 ms-1.
